Default How does Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGS) work?

I am looking at transferring the engine, gearbox and steering rack from a VGS s2k into my street car and vice versa as the mods in my car are nolonger street legal. Just trying to become a good Aus citizen

How does VGS actually work? What actually control it?
Does the computer control the vgs at all? The VGS s2k has a spoon computer atm. Where does the vgs controller get the signal from?

What do I actually need to transfer to my street car to enable the vgs?

Much appreciated for any information

Thanks in advance

Pardon my ignorance, but is that also the S2000 V-Spec that they have in Gran Tourismo 3 & 4?

As far as i can tell the VGS is achieved by having a varied tooth pitch on the rack of the steering rack and pinion.
Chances are that the EPS controller is modified to work with the VGS rack.
The normal EPS controller reads the engine RPM and vehicle speed from the ECU/dash and sends to the ECU a idle speed up signal.

STMike79, yes the VGS is in the limited V-spec, released in 2000

davepk, do you know where the controller is located in the car?

I just want to gauge how easy is it to transfer the vgs to another vgs car. I just wonder if I have to remove the whole wiring loom or is there an easier solution?

From what I gather the VGS controller is connected to the VSS but not sure if it's hooked up to any other thing from the ecu?

The EPS controller is in the engine bay behind the battery on LHD cars.
Its likely in the same spot on RHD cars, putting it alongside the brake master cylinder for you.
Its a metal box about 4x8x12cm with cooling fins on a portion of the box.

There are 2 or 3 connectors on the controller and one connector on the rack.

My guess is its a straight 2 component swap with no wiring changes needed. However, i dont have a VGS manual to back that up.

VSS? Vehicle Speed Sensor? The EPS controller taps into the instrument cluster to get the vehicle speed. At least according to the electrical diagrams in the Helms manual for a regular S2K. It taps into the ECU to get the engine RPM.
