What gives? I understand that the engines are different, but there shouldn't be that much discrepancy between the way the exhausts sound.
The engine determines how the exhaust is made, how it is expelled. Things like compression ratio, bore and stroke, redline, shape of the cylinder head chamber, angle of the valves, lift and duration of the cams, firing order of the cylinders, displacement, intake and exhaust runner (shape, size, design), block design, cooling efficiency, etc. all contribute to the kind of exhaust noise that comes out and what there is to work with.
The Japanese motorcycle industry is a prime example. They have been working for decades to try and duplicate the exact sound of a Harley without infringing upon any patents and copyrights. They've had a very hard time and I'm not sure they've achieved their goal yet. The point is, Harley has a very specific and unique engine design that generates a very distinctive sound. Even closely mimicking the engine won't produce the exact same sound.

Thats a good example you bring up about the japanese motorcycle industry. I'm glad they haven't found a way to mimick the harley sound. How weird would it be to see a japanese sport bike revving to redline making the *blurp blurp blurp* sound?

Thanks for the clarification! I searched and found a link to someone that did something similar to their exhaust to reduce the drone:
