how to detect mileage fraud?
hi everybody,
my buddy is in the market for an s2k. he found a beautiful ap2 for a great deal but suspects that the seats seem to be a little too worn out for the mileage that's currently on the odometer. is there any way to tell if the car's mileage is correct (assuming dmv and carfax paperwork is not suspicious)?

Mileage is only recorded in the speedometer in our cars. You can call Honda to see if there are service records of the car?
Also check obvious things carpet, floor mats and steering wheel for wear.
Seats might have been replaced with used older ones

thanks bbv and mister jew. i've seen the carfax and there's nothing suspicious on it. i didn't pay attention to the floor mats but the steering wheel and seat do seem like they've been through quite a bit of wear. these things are more subjective though, right? if the mileage is only kept in the speedometer, then there probably isn't any other more concrete source to verify, right?

Do the gas and clutch pedals show signs of wear on the nubs? That's usually a better indicator than the seat and steering wheel. That car could have been a demo car at an auto show, where hundreds of people climb in and check it out. My '03 has 214,000 miles and my seats are still mint because I have had seat covers since new. You really can't use the seats to judge miles.
If the car had new tires installed in the past, you can look at the paperwork - they write down the mileage when they install new tires.

There is one way to "trick the system"... I heard of a guy doing this to cars he sold (he is not my friend, I work in a dealership). He would buy the vehicle with say 80000 miles on it then go to a junkers and buy the cluster with whatever mileage and place it in the car he just bought, then when it came time to sell it he would stick the ORIGINAL cluster back in the car with 80000 miles on it... BUT it would be a month or 2 before selling it so it still showed signs of being driven, just not nearly as much. It is VERY sneaky and there is no way of telling.

Over in the UK they(dealers do this all the time) take a car and roll it back.
This is a story from '06 and with a electronic odometer you can't tell so you have to play detective.
