Jack stands are ok. Get some backup -- wood, concrete, wheels, whatever. Use all 4 jackstands or none at all, never a pair only. The car should be level when on jack stands. People do die when jack stands fail or are improperly used. Sadly, they will never post in this thread to tell you of their mistakes. Don't be swayed by how many people tell you that they've never had a problem -- they don't count towards the catastrophies that do matter.

Be well, be safe.

Just want to throw this out there. I've posted this in another thread in the FI forum as well.

Please don't speculate at any of the details. Speculation will not help the grieving family. It is a tragedy.

Be vigilant in working safely on your ride.

totally agreed, jacking up the car is the tough part. The last time i worked on my diff, i just jacked up the rear (stupidest thing to do) but luckily nothing happened.

A recent member just passed away doing the same thing, He jacked up the rear leaving the front down and it slipped off crushing him and causing his lungs to collasped.

I was wondering about all these safety stuff with working under the car also and this thread really helped me out with the tires under the rockers. Will start doing that from now on.
