How can I tell if my shift knob is OEM titanium and not aluminum?

I have a 2002 with the leather-wrapped Al knob. I doubt it weighs much different, since they only removed a thin layer of Al beforing wrapping. If you guys really want, I can unscrew and weigh it...

Why does the Ti one weigh more? I though Titanium was a very light metal. I Guess it is just that because it is so strong, it can be used in smaller quantities, and therefore is lighter because there is less of it?

As with all things in life... everything is relative! Al is one of the lightest metals on Earth (weighs about half what Ti does). The disadvantage is its ability to conduct heat much better than titanium. Great for wiring, not for your shift knob in the summer.

USACE: I'll pull and weigh it for you after lunch, though I'm guessing it will come in VERY CLOSE to 100g based on previous posts.

My leather wrapped 2002 knob is 240g.

Not much less than the Ti Voodoo Magnum i have at 280g.

The regular Ti Voodoo Knob is 243g so you can see the 2002 and up leather wrapped is pretty heavy already.

After one year of use my 02 leather wrapped al shift knob had the finish come off of it, it looked horrible. I bought the titanium and after one year of use it's still in mint condition, looks the same way as when i bought it. Aluminum Titanium - at least in my experience.

Personally, I like the brushed aluminum better than the TI OEM knob (I have both). The good thing about the TI knob is that it's heavier which helps with the shifts a bit. Also, in my personal experience, because the TI knob is smooth, it tends to heat up more quickly. I have burned my hand many more times on the TI knob that the Alum knob, but that's just me. Now, I keep a towel in the trunk to cover the knob if the car is going to sit for a day or two in the sun. If I decide to go back to the Alum knob or something else, you'll see my TI knob on eBay or in the forums
