How to ask a technical question
I have the permission of natedoggs2k to post this PM. It is a great example of how to ask someone a question, and nnot make them have to spend endless exchanges to get to the heart of the matter. Way to go, Dogg!:

Road Rage,
I have read many of your posts regarding oil and oil changes and filters for the S2K. I was hoping you could give me your personal suggestions.
I have a 2003 Honda S2000. I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic at 10K miles. My car is all stock except for the K&N filter I just ordered to replace the stock filter. I drive aggressively on a daily basis (this is my daily driver), and I tend to VTEC at least a few times each day (but not always redline). I live in Gainesville, FL (north central Florida), so it is hot here most of the year. I participate in one or two autocross events per year and two-to-three S2K meets (Florida Supermeet, SE Supermeet, and possibly the Dragon).
My goal is to be able to do oil changes every 5K miles. I could probably do this using the Mobil 1, but I feel that I would burn too much oil in 5K miles. Currently, I change it at 3,000-3,5000 miles and always notice that I end up burning about a quart of oil in that time, and it always comes out black (which is pretty typical of oil changes). I always use the Honda oil filters for the S2K. I also use LE-607 in the diff and change my tranny fluid every 6-8K miles with Honda MTF.
So, can I use Mobil 1 syn (10w30) for 5K mile intervals? Or should I switch to something else (even a durablend)? I use Mobil 1 because I've used it in many other cars, and it's readily available and affordable. I also have access to Valvoline Durablend, Castrol Syn (and dino) and many other dino oils. I don't have easy access to Redline, Amasol and some of the other "high-end" oils.
What would you recommend?
Thanks again for your help. If I left anything out, please let me know.
Nate
