How to adjust headlights?

i remember when i first got the car they were almost perfectly even and now its a noticable difference where as the right is a few inches higher. would 2-3 inches be too much or should i just not worry and forget about it?

some of you are wrong and some of you don't know where the "step" comes from.
This is WRONG:

As far as the "step", that is for the on-coming traffic like some of you have stated, you don't need to adjust them any more and if you notice the "cut-off" already has a slight curve to it, kind of like a sad smile, which aids in the glare so you don't blind on-coming traffic.
Here is a pic of the shield still mounted on the front portion of the projector, which some of you call it a "mask" and if you look closely at the center of it you will see the "step" on the shield:

^^ yes billman already posted what you said.
however, in your "right" picture, that alignment is just slightly "off". you should only see one notch, however, you can see a slight peak of a 2nd "notch" in your picture.

Absolutely not! The adjuster is fully accessible from inside the engine bay. Theres a cutout in each fender, and the star wheel adjuster is there. Use a long philips screwdriver to reach.

It always seems like my lights are adjusted too high. When i'm driving at night, the beam "seems" to be higher than the rear view of the car in front. I've never been honked so hopefully this is just normal.
