Here's a link to The Reverend's page on changing brake pads that might help you...having recently done this myself on my 2004 and previously changed pads and rotors on Miatas, an Escort, and a Focus...my opinion is that jacking up the S2000 was the most difficult part of the process...so if you are comfortable doing that, the rest should be a breeze. All you will need to check the front pads are a 12mm wrench/socket, and a 17mm or 19mm (one is for the rear, but I forget) There is just the lower bolt to remove, then pivot/swing the caliper up off the pads, and they will pull out to the sides.

It looks like there is a "pad" there.
You can inspect the outer pads visually by looking through the wheel spokes.
The front pads measure about 10 millimeters which is .39 inches. (just under a half inch thick) The rears, if I remember correctly, measure about 9 millimeters which is .35 inches. The pads should be replaced at around 3 millimeters. You would obviously have to remove the pads to measure for thickness, but you can get a pretty good idea of remaining pad life by visual inspection. In other words, if the pads are paper thin, you best replace them ASAP
Don't confuse the brake pad lining with the metal backing. Once you see a brake pad up close, you will know what to look for
