Horrible Noise when turning on car
You know that sound when you are sitting in any car car and it is already on and then you turn the key to turn it on again and it makes that horrible noise? That is the noise I heard this morning while turning on my car. I turned it on, it made that noise, and I turned it off. Turned it on again and again it made that noise. Otherwise drove normally. I have heard this sound from my car about 4-5 times over past 3 months. Anybody can help or experience this before?

sounds like your starter selenoid or the bendix is jamming, so the starter teeth are staying engaged to the flywheel and the engine then spins the starter faster then its designed to spin, and the starter makes that grinding noise.

I agree with Squeezer: the bendix is sticking. If this were my car I'd remove the starter and try greasing the main shaft the pinion gear rides on. If that doesn't correct the problem, then you're out the cost of a new starter.
On second thought, my car is still under warrantee.....

This happened to a boat that I rented; it chewed the teeth off the starter/damaged the teeth on the flywheel. I'd take care of that asap. Even though it wasn't my fault they charged me for the repair

Hi,
my S has the exact same problem. I noticed that the ugly "grind" noise occurs only on cold starts (if I leave my car outside and the engine is really cold) while it never happens on warm start ups or if the outside temperature in mild. I have talked to the dealership about it and it might be something related to the timing belt pulley which if I understood correctly is related to oil pressure. Anyways, this problem seems to be very common on the S... please read here:starter noise
I am taking my car in in January to see if they can finally take care of this... will keep you guys updated. If any of you get it figured out\fixed... PLEEASE post here so we can share the knowledge!

that link to the starter noise is not working...can you fix it
also yes it has been cold morning starts where this is happening but I can't tell you whether it happens in warm weather because it has been cold here for 2 months now since the noise started

What i meant to say is that on my S i haven't heard that noise when starting the engine at operating temperature... it only happens when it's cold and has been sitting overnight or at times for a few days. But if I drive the car, stop and start again after a bit, everything sounds OK..

Had the same problem and the starter would actually continue to turn even after pulling key out of ignition. I ended up replacing starter, and that is a tough job
