Honda Transmission Oil FTW!
So I've now tried a few different kinds of transmission lube in my '01 including Red Line Synthetic and Royal Purple. Hondas gear oil definitely makes it shifter more smoothly and less notchy.

My car has been sitting in near freezing conditions for 3-4 weeks in storage, I took it out the other day for a short drive and the tranny was shifting like proverbial butter right off the bat. I was expecting it to be very stiff until warm up but it worked flawlessly right from the start in the dead of cold. I don't normally drive in these conditions but it worked really well. I change the tranny fluid once a year regardless of mileage (overkill but it works) and always use Honda MTF2.

1. Used Honda, then Pennzoil Synchromesh, and now Amzoil; each time a little better; I'm going to stick with the Amzoil for all my drivetrain fluids.
2. I'm sure any of the good brands are fine.
