Honda Says:

hey guys,
I have a quick qusetion for you. I took my s into Honda for a mystery rattle, which from some s2ki posters it was either a timing chain auto tensioner or possibly the heat sheild above the Cat. Well just heard from Honda and they are suspecting the valve Keeper. I am not the most mechanically inclined and always try not to show Honda this so they do not try to take advantage. The deal is they want to charge me, even though under full warranty, $129.00 for the diagnostic(opening valve cover and looking inside I guess) and check the valve keeper and and do the valve adjustment. If they open up and find nothing wrong I am stuck paying the bill. If they open it up and find the keeper bad they will pay for all of it since the adjustment would be needed. So does this sound right or?
The rattle noise in question is intermittent and only happens when engine is hot. I can litterally open the hood pull on the throttle cable a little, close hood, and noise is gone(or is so quiet you now longer hear it.)
Thanks,
MH

IMHO the 129 fee is bogus if your car is still under warranty. If there's something wrong then then they should fix it period. Otherwise why have a warranty? Like I said just my 2 cents.

The dealership should not even ask you to pay. The car is under warranty. If you installed some aftermarket parts near the noise's source, then that's another story.

If it is the TCT, then that's easy to diagnose yourself. Take an automotive stethoscope and listen to it while the noise is apparent. It will be obvious if it is the source of the problem.
Additionally, if it does turn out to be the TCT, I would really like for you to have it replaced under warranty at Honda. I think too many people are replacing these on their own, therefore Honda does not realize how common this problem is.
