Default High pitch puffing sound

Only have 4500 miles on my 05. I began to hear a high pitch puffing sound coming from the engine bay today. Each puff is about 1 sec apart. Is this normal? Is this the sound from the PCV valve?

high pitch puffing sound
This could mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. It is EXTREMELY difficult to truly understand exactly what it is you are referring to, especially in light of the fact that you have given absolutely no accompanying details describing when, how and under what conditions the car is operating in.
Is it doing this in the middle of the night while you are sleeping and you hear it coming from your garage?

I think there's a midget joke in here somewhere, but I'm not going to do it.

It could be the EVAP purge soleniod making some noise when it's duty cycled on/off. If something falls off the car or it quits running It will be a lot easier to figure out what the noise was.

I thought you could read mind , but if you must know all the details. I did not notice it when I started the car, but definitely noticed it after driving back from the cleaners when the engine was fully warmed up. It is difficult to describe the sound. Like I said before the best I can describe it is high pitch puffs. Almost like a muted blow off valve from a turbo. I guess come to think of it it sounds like the air pump but it go on and off in frequent short bursts. That is as about the best I can do to describe it.

I can almost guarantee it's the EVAP purge soleniod. That's how they sound.

Don't worry about it.

The air pump only comes on when the coolant temp is below 135deg, and it runs for approx 20 seconds or so. Ocasionally it can be heard cyling back on briefly for the system self check.

The EVAP purge solenoid is part of a seperate emmisions control system for containing evaporative fuel emmisions. If the PCM determines EVAP purge needs to occur, it will turn on the purge solenoid (which is in the engine compartment) with a duty cycled signal. You hear the rapid clicking on and off of the solenoid.
