Help: VTEC overload
Hello,
Wasn't sure where on the site to post this as I think this is me being an idiot but I need an answer. I've just pulled out of my street and opened up the engine in 1st gear and went for it. When I hit 6500 rpm (in first!), I've felt an almighty pull on the acceleration and the speed dipped suddenly (I've ont changed gear and my foot is not on the clutch). It was a weird shunt almost similar to what you might get if you were coasting in neutral at pace and dropped into a low gear, the car would slow down but that's not what I've done here.
The car then went on to drive fine but can't help feeling like I shouldn't be trying to hit 6000 rpm in first gear. Is this correct and what had caused this blunder or is there something wrong? Above all else I just need to know I haven't f***ed my engine or caused any lasting damage?
Feel free to call me all names, if this is amateur, I can take it.

Yeah same thing happened to me but in 2nd gear. It was friday after work and I wanted to get home as fast as I could. I just turned on the car and started driving normally and rolled on the throttle when I was in 2nd. As soon as I hit 6k the rpm shot up to redline as if the clutch disengaged itself. After the temp rose to normal, the vtec'ing returned to normal.

thanks guys, that's literally reassured me, no end.
operating temp, clearly sounds like I've not played this by the book. does this damage the engine?

I wouldn't recommend it. I never hammer my car until it is up to operating temperature.
You're basically just bouncing off a soft rev limiter, that's the engine's way of saying "stop that"

Yes. Thank goodness the ECU is programmed to avoid high revs until the car is at operating temp. Demanding too much performance out of a cold engine prolly damages more engines, than running the car at 100MPH, all day --- once the engine is properly warmed-up with good oil pressure.
