Terry, that makes sense except that I'd imagine that oil pressure is lowest at idle, so why would the oil push at idle but not when the engine's running fast enough to be in boost. Also, why am I not seeing some loss in oil on the dipstick? I'm not argueing, but the facts still don't add up. Thanks, CB

Terry is absolutely correct.. that's what was happening when we first installed the turbo on mine. The oil pressure in the S at idle is relatively high.

Hi Derryck,

Is this a problem if it only happens intermittently and at idle? If so, what's the fix?

CB

PS: you still with the M3 or has something new taken your fancy?

We had to pull off the turbo and 'clear it out' and then (with the restrictor) it was fine. I got rid of the M3 awhile ago and am currently driving an 03 Cobra. However, I've been shopping around and will be getting rid of it sometime in the next several months. I think I've narrowed it to a used (2000ish) NSX, a used (2000-2001) 996 Carrera Cabriolet, or a new M3 convertible. That could change at any given moment though.

What do you mean by "clear it out"? Clear what out?

The afore mentioned oil blowing into the turbo.

Hiya Harry: naturally, I'm fully in compliance with all applicable laws in all concerned jurisdictions, but I have reason to believe it's not a problem with my, um, catalytic converter.

Hiya Derryck: I still don't quite get how oil leaks at lower pressures and not at higher pressures (not that I'm doubting you, but the physics don't make sense to me). Used NSX? Just drove one a few weeks ago and thought it was brilliant. The 996, well, it feels porky except when unleashed (0-60 in about as much time as it takes to lose your license).

Best to you both,
CB

Heh, Harry,

Does your rear strut brace leave any more clearance for the exhaust pipe? I need another 1/8th inch clearance for the 3" cannons.

My Turbo S had a major smoking session today. I'd just done a tight left hand swing around into a drive thru when it started billowing smoke on idle. The people behind me were not happy. It was still smoking when I pulled up to the window so I switched off the engine. About a minute later I switched it back on again ... no smoke. It appears to only happen to me whenever I do a really tight swing around with the car and then let it idle. It doesn't appear to be in one particular direction either. I've never seen it smoke when I'm actually moving. I'm using a test pipe. Only the first O2 sensor is actually in the exhaust flow. Also this only appears to happen for the first few weeks after pulling the backup fuse. The smoke was blue/grey. Ideas?

gilbertg,

Which turbo kit do you have? Sounds like your ECU is trying to readjust your fuel maps. Check to see your o2 sensor is working?
