Help! Extremely hard to move shifter to 5th

The only part of the shift linkage that can be checked without taking the transmission apart is the shift lever itself. Either all the lube on the shifter is gone, a syncro is damaged, or the shift fork itself is bent.

Corrosion/water has been found in the housing the lever attaches too on cars that have been in fires. (I know because I've got a trans out of a fire car)

It lessens the possibility that it's syncros. Now, you might want to concentrate on bent or broken shift pieces/forks.
