Default Help diagnosing a noise

I just started noticing a horrible noise coming from the rear of my S2000. It seems to be inline with the rotation of the wheels at low speeds and only when not under acceleration. It sounds like the noise that you hear when you first break lose lugs taking off your rims. Its kind of a metal click noise. Any idea what it could be?

Car drives fine, I have had the diff and axle's replaced and it doesn't sound like either of those problems.

At one point there was a TSB about the axle nuts being overtightened and causing a similar noise, I had this done about 4 years ago to a very similar noise and I am thinking they may have been overtightened when the shop changed my axles. However when i had the problem before it only made the noise when i first backed up. Could this be the same problem, if so can I fix it or would I have to take it to the shop and need new axle nuts?

Probably the same problem...and it isn't that the axle hub nut is overtightened, it is that it is undertightened. It should be torqued to 220 ft-lb. Older manuals may still say 180 ft-lb and that is incorrect.

It can also help to have the axle splines greased.

is it a clunking noise? I might have the same problem, but it only happens sometimes.

Yeah, its kind of a clunking. It sounds very similar to when you break a wheel lug loose, but over and over as the wheel spins. There seems to be no noise for the first few minutes of driving and then it starts and stays really bad up until at least 40MPH (it could happen past, but i dont hear it). It also stops when under acceleration and gets worse when braking.

If it is just the axle hub nut, Is it something the dealer has to do? You think they would cover it under the TSB again or is 7 years old probably a little too late?

it could be the axle hub nut check the diy here. Otherwise Did you recently lower your car? What happened to me was that same sound. even over bumps too. So i wd-40ed everything tightened the axle nut and still get the sound. check you sway bar and also the 2 bolts per upper suspension arm in the rear 2 bolts each side so 4 total. I had to re-torque it to 80-90lbs. It got loose after lowering.. I dont know why it just did by itself.

That seems like a lot of torque on those upper suspension bolts.

I've had mine tightened before. So I'm not sure if it's the problem. Your noise seems to be the same kind as mine. My car drives fine for a while, and all of a sudden the noise hits. It's weird because it's not something i can recreate when i want it to. It just sorta happens.

I did some more searching and I believe the culprits are the cv joints. There's a TSB. I hope this helps the both of us.

Yeah, I had that problem a while ago and replaced them. It doesnt sound the same for me.

I am thinking it might even be warped rotors or something. The more I drive the worse the noise is getting. Starting to sound more like brake squeaking.

Any suggestions on new rotors? Preferably ones that dont rust like stocks.
