I'd ignore the whole "glazing" thing. It's probably true but, doesn't really matter.
If it desn't slip while you're driving it then, you're OK. If it slips while you drive it, you'll end up ruining some expensive parts. It's pretty black and white.

If it is slipping all the time even if you are driving very easy, the clutch has no chance and needs to be replaced. If it grips most of the time, you might be able to get the glaze off IF it is glazed. However depending on milage and etc, your disc may be very burned down by now anyways.
It slips more in 3rd gear because there is more load. It's more strenuous to the drivetrain the higher the gear.

And what about the last owner? Are you the first owner of the car? You can't know what a previous owner may have done to the car. He may have used up the clutches "9 lives".
