Do you have aftermarket gears in your differential? If you do and you have the needed speedometer calibrator installed, it may have failed causing:
Another odd symptom to this problem I thought I would add is that once the VSS error occurs and you get the 0 MPH and EPS and the CEL occasionally after about 30 seconds or so the engine just dies as if the fuel is cut off, until the car slows to about 20 MPH (guess because I have no indication) then the fuel returns and so does MPH indication and steering returns to normal.

I replaced the failed speedometer calibrator and problem has never returned.
