Default Header Heat Shield

I have a Mugen header on its way and was wondering if the stock header heat shield was necessary. I was wondering if it basically was a safety device, or if it is really necessary to keep the heat away from the engine. I'm thinking that most of the heated air is removed at speed and exits under the car ?? Has anyone taken temp reading w/o the shield. Looking for some feedback.

Thanks.

You're not keeping heat away from the engine, you're keeping it away from the battery, a vessel filled with some nasty chemicals. Normally I would say leave it in, but experience has shown that quite a few here run without it and, so far, have seen no deliterious effects to speak of.

The Mugen header comes equipped with its own heat shield. I think the reason Honda equipped the OEM header with a heat shield is because in the JDM model, the brake master cylinder is on that side, and that's more sensitive to the temp than the battery (?)

I think you are confused. The Mugen header comes with a heat shield you don't reuse the OEM heat shield. It comes with it's own. So there would be no reason not to use it.

I have the Mugen header and installed the heat shield. I considered removing as well, but advice from the board and inspecting things in the vicinity ( battery, AC tube, brake line running to front right.) swayed me to keep it on. It is a shame. The header looks awesome!! I seem to remember reading that, even on the left drive version, the risk of overheating the brake fluid in the hose running nearby was considered too great to remove the shield.

You could always shield the brake line by itself to leave the header wide open...

Why NOT install the heat shield?
