xviper - have you noticed any benifits from the TS hood in combination with the exposed toda manifold? Do the vents work well to extract heat out of the engine bay?

I had to remove the OEM header heatshield to fit the J's engine damper heatshield. When I did, I noticed a huge increase in engine compartment temps (and I already have a vented hood).

It took no more than 15 minutes to fabricate a custom header heatshield. Just snipped a piece of sheet aluminum, and shaped it by hand. Drilled 2 mounting holes, and applied many layers of aluminum foil to the back. I am totally amazed at how well it works!

I have not done any temp recordings with a probe, so my answer is not very scientific.
During the summer, we all see heat waves coming off our hoods once everything gets to operating temp. With the vented hood, those heat waves are VERY apparent coming out of those vents. They are many times larger and moves many times faster than the ones just coming off the stock hood. Also, when I open the hood up, there is less of a "hit" of hot air that normally whacks me in the face. Those vents have to be doing something.

Kodokan_4,

Which heat shield did you fabricate? The one that attaches to the chassis or the one that attaches to the header?

If you fabbed the one that attaches to the header, what gauge metal did you use?

Thank you,

Terry

I fabricated the one that mounts to the header.

I don't know what gauge the aluminum is. I just went to the hardware store and grabbed some sheet aluminum that was easy to bend by hand.

Thank you Kodokan_4. I'm gonna have to try that. My Mugen heatshield has cracked and I can't get a new one either as one of the 4 bolts holding it on as snapped off. I tried extracting it from the mounting tab on the header tube but it seems to have kinda welded itself into the threads.

I'll get some aluminum from the hardware store and bend it. I'm hoping that I can at least use the two upper mounts and the remaining functional one down lower facing the chassis.

Ugh... today my Mugen header's top two attachment places for the shield snapped off... i think it is because of the colder-than-usual temperature (got to about 8 degrees) and heat cycling, because after driving a while i suddenly heard a knocking sound in the engine, and stopped and found the shield just sitting down further.

WIth this in mind... do you think i could weld new attachment " L bracket" arms onto the header, so I can put the stock heat shield back on?

I am wondering... perhaps I should just leave the heat shield off? Does anyone know what kind of performance different you get with it on/off?

Thanks... any input appreciated!

I had an early Mugen header that had the same problem. I had bought it from King who replaced it, and the new one is stronger. I did not want to run without the heat shield.
