Has anyone ever broke a Ap2 retainer? I did.
Spec's: '00 S2000 - upgraded ap2 retainers and keepers on the intake side at 96,000 - did this at 101,693.
Well, I am not going into details because it really is no one's business, but I was going about X amount of speed, and shifted into [3rd] gear which I knew I was going into, but didn't know I was going X amount of speed. Snapped the Ap2 retainer in half, valve dropped into the cylinder pics will be up in the morning.
I would have to say the motor experienced 15K+ RPMS when this happened. Stay tuned.
Of course this thread will get a few ass hats, but hey mistakes happen.
When I did do this, I had no power really, the check engine light flashed, I turned off the car immediately. I already knew what I did. So far the damage is 1 retainer snapped in half. Keepers ( Cotters ) have not been found yet. I took out cylinder #2 spark plug, it is messed up bad. The valve I am sure is bent/broken one of the two. I hope I do not have a hole in my cylinder, but it could end up being that.

If your engine actually hit 15k+ rpm, its not that surprising. Something was going to break. The stock internals are not made to spin that fast. The valve probably floated due to lack of spring tension at that rpm and got hit by the piston.

Actually, I think people have always been able to break the AP2 retainers. ITs just that the AP1's can fail later on during its life, whiel the AP2s are known for just..letting go, not really stretching.

15k rpms in 3rd gear = over 110 mph.
