Default Half Shafts

Is it possible for the half shafts or the CV joints to go bad? If so should i be able to rebuild them or do they need to be replaced?

You are refering to swapping the CV joints from side to side to get a new wear surface correct?

Correct. You can even re-use the band clamps, and it's recommended you do so.
