Default Had a good scare today: Hood unlatched on freeway

Any ideas as to what to check for? Hood "popped" on the freeway at erm... 70-ish. No bumps or jolts. when it popped it scared the living crap outta me. Then I had to pull off the freeway and wound up in not the best of neighborhoods to re-latch the hood.

Hood is normal stock hood and appears to latch ok when dropped from 4-6".

This is not high enough. Before I got my CF hood, I used to drop it from 2 feet. You may not have fully latched the catcher. This hood was designed to be dropped. It doesn't hurt it to let it go from a good height.

Oh, thanks viper. I always followed the saying that you put the hood down and then push it all the way down.

You do for most other car hoods, but since this one is made of aluminum, the manual instructs to NOT push on it as it could dent or crease. Therefore, you drop it from a reasonable height. "Reasonable" can be anything it takes to fully latch it. It seems obvious that in the case of the thread starter, 6" is not high enough.

In fact, for my old Viper, the manual instructed the owner to do exactly what you just said - lower it as far as gravity will take it, then push down on it to latch it. Some cars, you must slam the damn thing pretty hard to get it to latch.

Mine was popping every once in a while until I screwed down the rubber stoppers by the radiator holddowns and also by the strut towers. Stopped it from popping right away.

I'll also suggest a little lubrication on the latching mechanism to allow it to function smoothly.

Well, I just put 300 miles on the car that day with various kinds of driving. All of that with the hood latched.

My hood closes tight dropping from about 6" (maybe a bit more, but not 12"). At that height it's flush with the fenders and bumper. It's never has this problem in nearly 3 years of ownership.
