gutted cage question...
so im and thinking of gutting my interior but the dash and door panels and making a cage to install but i am not gonna get a hardtop for a few more months and i still like ot drop the top occasionally so i was wondering if i need to have that little plastic "tray" for the soft top to retract into or if it will be fine just kinda dropping in the open space left there....some constructive advice would be greatly appreciated ...thanks

Wait to install a cage until you have a hardtop. The softtop makes a cage install not worth the effort. The frame be the problem. Look at the hinge right next to your head when you are in the car. That is where the cage need to be. The pastic tray can go and not hurt the top at all.
The dash is a non-issue. The cage will fit just fine.

well its soon only gonna be a part time street car and also im no sure i wanna go with more than just the hoop over your head and the rear supports tied into the sub frame....basically i wanna tighten up the chassis and i really am not a big fan of interior furnishings.... im just trying to figure everything out and make my choice from there...

If you put in a cage that works with the soft top, you are buying the worst of both worlds -- a badly compromised cage and you still have a messed up street car.
Either keep it stock (or at most, just a roll bar) or assume it is no longer a street car or a convertible and get rid of the softtop.
(Yes, I know there are some Japanese companies building cages that fit under the softtop, but those are deeply compromised compared to what you can install if you ditch the softtop.)
