i would also love if someone can help with the correct part number

i was also looking into this issue....random starts (not warm, only the first starts when cold) i will hear a grind noise as well...i recently bled the clutch fluid, and my car has 80k so im unaware of the mileage on the clutch so for a while i have been worrying about the master/slave cylinders and/or clutch (i purchased my car recently).....but the problems described with the alternator you guys are describing seem synonymous with what i am having issues with...
I see 3 part numbers
31200-PCX-A01RM 001 001 STARTER MOTOR ASSY. (RMD) 260.18 184.73 Qty:
31200-PCX-A02 001 001 STARTER MOTOR ASSY. (DSDHP) (DENSO) 569.02 404.00 Qty:
31200-PCX-A02RM 001 001 STARTER MOTOR ASSY. (RMD) 260.18 184.73 Qty:

I'm sure it will be asked, so I'll just answer it now... You get what you pay for.

By the way, your clutch and alternator have nothing to do with this.

Looks like http://www.bernardiparts.com/ has better pricing.

common problem on AP1s. Had it for 5 years and there are other old threads with this issue. I think its a design flaw, one of the bad things of the S2. I never seen another car do that and not have the starter go out shortly after. And yeah its random. And yeah it makes one look bad at the gas station lol but doesnt affect anything.

Had this same issue. I ended up having a busted passenger side motor mount. After I replaced it I never heard the starter stick again. Perhaps the rocking of the motor caused it to hang on early morning startups. Combination of cold and jarring of the motor maybe??

May be good to check the mounts. Just my .02
