Go by your local Chevy or Cadillac dealership. Make sure you get the friction modified version. They love to say the have the GMSM version and it's the same!
I tried about a half dozen Chevy/Caddy dealers around the Houston area. None of them even know what GMSFM was. All they tried to sell me was straight transmission fluid.

I got mine from Hardtopguy!

AC Delco are GM parts. Motorcraft are Ford parts and Mopar branded stuff is Chrysler.

GM, Ford, and Chrysler branded parts are sold through the dealers only, as far as I know. AC Delco, Motorcraft, and Mopar can be found at the dealers but are also available through most of the chain stores like NAPA, Auto Zone, and O'Reilly's, etc.

I don't know why...maybe I'm on crack or something....but I feel that it shifts even better after about 2000 to 3000 miles.

If you had shown to have a new car, I'd say that the drive train is just breaking in. My '04 model loosened up considerably between 5000 and 10000 miles on the odometer and that was before the oil change to GMSFM, which was another nice improvement.

My questions to you would be,

1) How many total miles are on the car?
2) how much experience do you have as an S2000 driver?

With regards to question #1, we get the occasional post on this forum of someone who stumbled onto a really low mileage used S2000. If you fall into that category, it could be that your transmission is still breaking in.

As far as question #2 goes, speaking for myself, I found that "I" had to learn to drive a manual transmission all over again with the S2000. I never considered myself to be a raw beginner with respects to driving a manual tranny but I'd never been in "anything" with a transmission as tight and precise and this one is. I tend to think that at least half of the improvement in shift quality and smoothness that I've seen in the time I've had this car is as much about "how I" drive the car and have learned handle the gear shift as it is about how much the transmission has worn in or the lubricant that's inside it.

Personally, I'd say you're just getting used to it!

I have a CPO 2004 and found the first to second shift occasionally "crunchy" so I replaced the transmission fluid at !5k with honda fluid and didn't notice any real difference. I agree with Steve as I find with more practice, the shifts are more consistantly smooth. It seems that the shifter is incredibly picky about the rythem and rpm of the shifts. That said, I am still thinkingn about changing to the GNSMFM or Redline Manual transmission fluid so perhaps it will be just a little more forgiving.

Hi K,

I changed to the GMSFM at 13.7k miles. I tend to describe the improvement as "significant." For me, that means that it was definitely noticeable and has remained that way. I rarely get the 1-2 "crunch" any more. It's still there, but not as badly, when the transmission is cold during the winter months.

Here in Texas, we've been in the mid to high 80's for "low" temps and mid day heat pushing triple digits during this past summer. When it's like that, I almost never feel the 1-2 crunch. Now that the temps are starting to drop, we got down into the upper 50's in my area last night, I'm starting to notice the crunch when the transmission is cold but 1) it's still better than it was before the oil change and 2) it doesn't take long for it to warm up enough to get past this issue. Right now, it's warming up enough within the first 1 to 2 miles.

FWIW!

Have there been any problems with anyone using the GMSMFM? I would like to think that the honda fluid is the best for our trannies.

I loved the GMSMFM, I used the honda MTF for a while but it just wouldn't last before it would/could grind...the GM stuff lasts a lot longer...however I drive the car pretty hard at times so it could be expected.

I've only had mine in 6k miles so far almost 6 months. Not sure how far I'll take it though, now that I own the car I plan to change the tranny and diff fluids at least once a year, if not slightly more frequent.
