Gang: AC Delco sent me some tech info on their products. Perhaps this will help you all a bit as there has been some confusion on what is what. I listed parts and AC's name for them, and my comments are in (parenthesis).
Part 10-4005
88900332 General use MTF
(this appears to be a fortified mineral oil, with additives safe for the Getrag and ZF transmissions GM has used over the years; probably not the best choice for the Honda S2000, as it does not appear to offer any performance advantage over the Honda MTF)
Part 10-4014
88900399 Syncromesh FM (for NV1500 trannies)
(This is the "friction modified" formulation. It is Semi-synthetic. It has been specially formulated to deal with a truck transmission, the NV [New Venture] 1500. What special needs the NV1500 has is unknown to me, as is its compatibility with the MY00-03 S2K's, or the new MY04 tranny. I am inclined to believe that it is so specific to one application that it might not be a good choice for our cars - if someone wants to use it over 5k miles and report back, then please do so).
Part 10-4006
88900333 Syncromesh
(This is the one that has been recommended for a number of trannies, including the Honda and the TTC T-56 used in Vettes, Cobras, and Vipers. It is Semi-synthetic).
************************************************** **
The following is a gear oil, GL-5: Might be good for the diff.
Part 10-4016
88900401 75w90
(I included this because I ran across this in the tech info. The gear oil has a "grape scent". I kid you not! So if any of you are particularly sensitive to the sulfur smell of regular gear oil, you ship has come in. Grape scent - now I have seen it all).
************************************************** ***
Please note that I do not have any practical experience with any of these GM products, so please do not e-mail and ask for a recommendation. I posted this as a reference tool for those who have already decided, and to try and clear up the regular vs. FM issue.
