I changed the honda mtf every 5K. GM cars that use this, ie corvette, have a larger fluid capacity. I think they take 5-6 qts. That coupled with the high temps our trannys go through probably speeds up breakdown.

Doesn't make sense since in automatic transmissions the system is under higher pressure and it is cooled. There are several types of GM synchromesh. I just found out that it is a partial synthetic, not full. Changing tonite at 3900miles.

There are several manufacturers that use ATF in their manual transmissions. BMW for one. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Chevy was the same way.
I thought it rather peculiar at first too... but the wife's 328is did indeed specify Dexron II or better ATF for the manual tranny.

The Corvette, Viper, and SVT Cobra all use versions of the TTC T-56. It is spec'd for Dexron III - Ford uses Mercon V which is very close.
GM Syncromesh Friction modified was designed for a truck tranny, the ND1500. I posted all about GMS a while back.
I know some people who have used the GMS and MTL in the Cobras, and the results have been mixed. I tried the RL MTL and did not like it - shifting was notchy. I ended up using Valvoline Durablend ATF which worked well.
Warning: I posted a warning thread about using alternate lubes other than Honda's in the tranny for MY04 cars - there has been some evidence, anecdotal at this point, that lubes that are too lubricious cause the carbon syncronizers to glaze, messing up their engagements and subsequently degrading shiftability. Be cautious.
Pennzoil Syncromesh is similar to GMS, and was designed for the same purpose - to reduce the warranty claims GM was getting becayse people were putting GL-5 lubes in the Getrag trannies GM was using in a lot of cars, which damaged the bronze syncro rings.
I am going to use MTF until I see some evidence that alternate fluids perform better and cause no side effects. I am not into lubricant dice playing, and it seems sometimes that the zeal to make "mods" to cars sometimes outweighs the downsides.

Syncromesh works for me, but only if I overfill to the full 2 qts. Any less than that and I also notice it degrades quickly with grinds coming back soon as I made the change.
I recently tested the limits on a canyon run in which I was constantly shifting between 2nd and 3rd. Before, it would heat up the tranny and cause grinding after the run anytime I had to shift from 1st to 2nd or from 3rd to 4th. But after the overfill, it shifted as smoothly as it did before the run.
