gm friction modified losts its magic

HI guys, sorry if the post sounded misleading,im not at all blaming the gm mtf.Actually its the best for the transmission so far!If i do the brief pause before shifting into second, then it will usually go without any grinding, but not always.I rebuilt my own transmission per the tsb 00-55.The box was perfect after that for about 3k.I could shift very quickly into second. Then it began to grind again and thats why i put in the gmfm mtf.It seemed that it took care of the problem at the time and then it started grinding second again.I have already drained the fluid through a paint strainer and have found no metal particles,so i put that very same fluid back in again. All of the other gears are much smoother though.I personally have a problem shifting with a pause into second gear because i have driven many other s2ks without any grind into second, and thats why i want to replace the box!

I replaced the entire 1st and 2nd gear set (synchro rings, synchro springs, synchro hubs, synchro sleeves)and the 1st/2nd shift fork. When i took the box apart there was only very slight burring on the second gear synchro ring, everything else was perfect.I did the rebuild with supposedly upgraded parts that make the 2nd gear synchro work harder.Like i said before the box was perfect after the rebuild until around 3k and then it began grinding again.I spoke with two honda engineers about this and they told me i should replace the box.

honda mtf tends to last longer than any other mtf i've had experience with. sure it might not be as smooth as gm friction modified (only initially) but having a fluid that has consistent protection and feel for a couple thousand miles is very important.

Like I've said before, I think every S2000 tranny has its own personality. Any particular tranny oil will be gold in some, and rat piss in others.

I think a lesson can be learned from this thread. We have posts from very credible posters here stating opposing experiences. If the fluid you are using is working well, continue to use it, regardless of what it may be. Unless you are experiencing issues with your tranny in some way, don't fix what ain't broke. Once you've found a juice that works for you, stick with it.
(Excepting those who simply MUST experiment. )

That is exactly opposite from my experience with Honda MTF and GMSFM. Honda MTF felt great for the first 500 miles, then started a down hill spiral.
