Getting to the Bottom of the Startup Noise
Ok, so I've posted and seen other posts about people getting a noise at startup. The details on the noise.
1) Sounds like the starter is staying engaged after the car is started
2) Usually only happens on first start of the day
3) Seems to happen when it is especially cold outside
So what is it?

I have this same issue and just searched for this problem. I found this thread and figured I would chime in so you know there are other people with this issue.
It does sound like the starter is staying engaged after it starts. I notice it really only does it when the engine it cold. I'll monitor it later tonight.
I'll keep searching and see if I can find anything.

Enough already
It's not the starter, it's the timing chain tensioner.
Loud clicking right after letting go of thr start button, then it abruptly stops after a second or two.

Yeah...I saw alot of those posts you made after searching.
The only thing that i didn't quite get was the sound that was described in those posts was not the same way that i would describe this sound. This is the exact same sound that a starter would make if i try to start the car again after it is running.
None the less, i am going to look into checking on the tensioner,
Thanks Billman!

Go start your car. While it is running, push in the clutch and press the engine start button. You will hear the starter grind. That is the noise I am getting.
I don't have a video camera, otherwise I would take a video of it.
This noise happens IMMEDIATLY after pressing the start button, and it is best described as a starter grind. It doesn't click like the sound from the video...and it lasts less than a second.
I'm gonna see if I can track down a video camera so I can show you what happens.

mine is the same thing. same sound as pressing the start button when its already running.. The only thing that alleviates the prob is by cycling through the on off position with the key 4-5 times (depends on how cold it is, doesnt happen when its not cold)... (this works bout 85% of the time..)
and i agree, this does not sound anything at all like that video clip... To those that question what it sounds like, just press the damm start key when the engine is running! its the same exact sound... lol
