Default Gearing and Clutch Question

This may be a stupid question.

Would you need a stronger clutch if you went with the 4.44 gears?

NO! To "hold" the weight of the car, the gears will not make the clutch work any harder than stock. To "motivate" the weight of the car, the clutch will be less stressed due to the mechanical advantage involved.

The amount of force applied to the clutch has nothing to do with the final drive. Although, the lower gearing will allow you to engage the clutch with less feathering, which will increase the life of the clutch disk.

Thanks for the replies. I apologize for my ignorance.

actually, you raise a good point. With the higher final drive...4.77, the clutch disk may see more heat and friction under RACE conditions where you could have some slipage ON A ROAD COURSE for extended sessions. Shifting more frequently with the higher final drive puts you higher into the rpms (ie, up into the powerband) which does take it's toll on the clutch. But in terms of the 4.44s, you probably want see any of that unless you shift like those weaklings in fast and furious.

I have a couple other gearing related questions that I thought I would add to this thread.

1) With a FI S2k using the AEM EMS to tune, if I added the 4.44 gears and the yellow box would I need to retune the EMS?

2) Would 4.44 gears affect the spooling of the turbo? If I am fully spooled at 3.8k rpm's now would the 4.44's make the turbo spool faster or would the turbo spool the same and only the mph change?

Again pardon my ignorance but I need to educate myself before making a big mistake.
