Geared Ap2
I know the gear set topics have been butchered on this board, and i did do my fair share of searching, but i never came across an Ap2 with a gear set. I know all the drawbacks of fuel efficiency, and the $3.00-$4.00 tradeoff doesn't bug me really. I'm planning on doin a few autocrosses and track events. It is a daily driver too (for now).
Anyway, my questions are:
1. Is there a rather noticable difference between the 4.44 and 4.57 performance wise?
2. How much shorter will my gears be?
3. I'd also like to get your personal opinion on the two
I know i've seen a chart sorta thing where it shows mph being lost. That would be great help right now. Thank!

I would go with 4.57's or even 4.77's even if you have AP2. 4.77's will be really short and if you plan on FI or you commute with your car a lot i wouldnt do it... if i had AP2 i would still go 4.77's, after all.. you want the best bang for your buck dont ya?
4.44 is a 8.2% increase, 4.57 is a 11.4%, and 4.77's 16.3%. Fuel efficiency wont go down unless you use the gas a lot more, otherwise it should stay the same.
This is your AP2 on 4.10's (245/40/17 tire):
Maximum speed in first gear: 36.9 mph
Maximum speed in second gear: 56.5 mph
Maximum speed in third gear: 78 mph
Maximum speed in fourth gear: 99.5 mph
Maximum speed in fifth gear: 122.5 mph
Maximum speed in sixth gear: 151 mph
This is your AP2 on 4.57's (245/40/17 tire):
Maximum speed in first gear: 33.1 mph
Maximum speed in second gear: 50.7 mph
Maximum speed in third gear: 70 mph
Maximum speed in fourth gear: 89.2 mph
Maximum speed in fifth gear: 109.9 mph
Maximum speed in sixth gear: 135.4 mph
This is your AP2 on 4.77's (245/40/17 tire):
Maximum speed in first gear: 31.7 mph
Maximum speed in second gear: 48.5 mph
Maximum speed in third gear: 67 mph
Maximum speed in fourth gear: 85.5 mph
Maximum speed in fifth gear: 105.3 mph
Maximum speed in sixth gear: 129.8 mph

You can plug in your numbers there and see the charts. The dropdown menu has the transmission ratios for AP1 & AP2.

this is a stupid question, would you have to recalibrate the speedometer in a gear ratio change? If you did, is that pricey/hard to do?

You don't "need" it but your speedo will be off otherwise.

i'd get 4.57's. one little thing tho, they will decrease your fuel mileage if you do lots of highway driving. you dont have to be using the gas anymore, its just that you will have a higher crusing rpm therefore more gas being used. but the difference isnt too drastic from what i've heard.

Arite, now that we got the gearing out of the way, along with the obvious fuel consumption, what are we looking at as far as performance? Some dude said he pulled a 13.8 with his 4.77 set, and i could've sworn ones have claimed mid to low 13's with a 4.57 set. If the 4.77 gives you that kind of increase -which i think it does not considering a set of decent tires and perfect launch/shifting stock should get you that time- then the 4.44's are the most pointless things created since tiptronic. I need to know how much go i'm gonna get!

leave it stock. the ap2 gears are already wicked short in the first 4. just do some mods, and you will be quite happy with the stock gearing. if you want me to elaborate to the extent of a book i will. until then, leave the stock gears in, and mod the rest.

I love my 4.57's ... best way to know is to find another member locally with gears and ask if you can test drive and/or ride so you can feel the difference...
the AP2 with 4.57's is much brighter and feels better down low - this gearset offers enhanced feeling of responsiveness with only minor sacrifice in need to shift faster...the loss of 10mph at the top end will only be felt by a few people ever. How many opportunities in the life of your ownership will you be approaching or exceeding 139mph?
