i would have thought that was obvious....however, look at the shaft....are the indents IN the threaded area, or BELOW it???

If they are below it, just file/grind them back till the shaft is flush and your knob should just screw right on

If they are in the thread, filing/grinding will just ruin the thread even more so you have to have the shaft rethreaded.

Oh I think I get you now. The dent is definately in the existing threaded bits. If it was below I don't think there would be a problem of screwing the knob back on.
