Is this the gear grind?
I've read through the lengthy archives on this topic, but I've never gotten a definitive answer. This is my first manual, so I don't have alot of experience with gear grinding, etc.
Basically when the tranny is cold, on the 1-2 upshift I can feel gears whirring and I hear a rapid clicking sound before the gear engages. Note that I am rev matching and applying soft but constant pressure on the gearshifter. No slamming.
It still does it, despite this technique and only stops after the transmission is completely warm. After that, it's smooth as butter.
Is this the gear grind or just standard MO for this box? It has become so annoying I am having to double clutch on the 1-2 to avoid it.

An actual gear grind is so obvious it will make your skin crawl.
Take a hand saw and quickly run the teeth across another metal edge. That's the sound of a gear grind. Anything less than this is just the tranny's syncros doing their thing. It's more evident when the tranny is cold. Don't worry about it.

i get that too. feel like resistance in 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.
goes away when it's warm. hopefully a tranny flush should make it better.
usually i'll just push a little gas for every gear til the tranny is warm. little gas , quick shift, next gear, little gas, next gear..etc

Interesting.....The sound is like touching a pipe to a spinning gear -- a hollow, choppy kind of sound.
At any rate, it sounds bad, but from what you guys are saying a gear grind sounds a lot worse.
I guess I'll continue to double clutch the 1-2

Grind the gear... Going around 20mph try to put it in 2nd without the clutch... I think that would cause a grind right? Don't even need to push the shifter that hard... Just try weakly to put the car in gear without the clutch...
I think everyone should experience the grind at least once to know what it is... It isn't exactly seriously dangerous to grind, but you should avoid grinding repetitively.
