Started a 200 mi long trip and maybe 30 minutes into i smell a strong smell of gas and look at the side of my car and gas is pouring out of the cap.. it was on completely. When i loosened the cap a huge amount of pressure was released. The tank was over pressurized but not to sure where to go from here or what to test to know what i should buy. Any input would be great!

Do you have a history of filling up the tank past the first click of the fuel hose ? If you keep filling past the first click of the fuel hose you will fill the vent pipe with raw fuel over time and that will cause issues.

Check the o-ring on the cap. Maybe its worn out and have cracks or maybe its not even there anymore.
