Default gas gauge

I bought an 05 S2000 in May of 06 and the gauge has never indicated less than 3/4 of a tank. I took the car in for service on Monday and the dealer asked to keep the car overnight while they ordered a part (fuel sensor?) The part evidently did not work because the service guy says they have a call in to Honda on the problem. A search does not mention this particular problem. Does anybody have any idea what the problem might be. Maybe I can get my car back before it snows.

A faulty gauge or a faulty sender, or damaged wiring in between. It's not common for the senders or gauges to go out.
