Gas or Fuel Cap CEL

Gas or Fuel Cap CEL
Before buying the s2000, I was aware that the fuel cap needs to be tightened fully otherwise CEL will appear. In fact, it says so under the fuel cap.
One day, a few weeks ago, I got the CEL and I was like and i borrowed a obd ii reader and made sure it was the fuel cap code and erased it and tightened the cap. (Thought to myself "how the hell did i not tighten it all the way" even though I was sure I did).
Anyways, life goes on......
Today, the CEL comes on during my lunch. I was like and I have yet to run the obd ii reader to see the code. Anyways, at my next stop, I pop the fuel door and I see that the fuel cap is not tightened. This time I am 101% positive that when I filled up last, within the past 10 days, the cap was tightened to like 8 clicks. WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN???
I will probably verify the cause of the CEL within the next 36 hours.

Grab the cap by the outside when turning. There is a TSB about the threads on the filler neck. They are binding on your cap, causing the ratchet mechanism to engage. From your perspective the cap is tight, but it's really not.
When you grab the cap by the outside, and not the handle, you'll feel the cap bind, then get easy again before it fully seats.
Good luck, I've been dealing with this for 5 years, you just get used to it.

When you say grab the cab by the outside, do you mean just close the cap by grabbing other parts of the cap other than the handle? Is there a need to apply pressure any where?
Thanks

Its possible your fuel filler neck became deformed over time and could have been cause by overfilling your gas tank. When the gas pump clicks and shuts off dont "top it off", that overfilling is what causes the filler neck to deform and turn oval shaped instead of being round like it should. Theres a TSB on that also but i dont think youll have any luck getting anything out of Honda for it. Mine got messed up a few yrs back. I was on a road trip and the only fuel station for 100miles turned out to be this hole in the wall fuel station with pumps that must have been from 1901. Their pumps didnt have the auto shut off and me not knowing that i overfilled it and sure enough messed up the fuel neck and then had the gas cap problems with the CEL. Anyways what i did and it fixed the problem was i got a brand new gas cap from Honda. Then i took my dremmel with a grinding stone bit and i removed maybe .5 to 1mm off the threads and its worked perfectly ever since. No CEL no pain in the ass to put on cap nothin. Simple solution.

Forget the new fuel cap, that will not fix anything. it is the filler neck that needs to be replaced. A new cap will do the same thing in s very short time. The 2002 all had this bad filler neck. It just depend on how bad it got. The neck is about 75 for the part. PIA to replace, but not hard to do.
