Fuel tank not filling all the way?
Hey guys since I purchased MY02 s2000 and filled the gas tank, it has never reached full on the fuel gauge. Its always like ~2 bars short of full. I never top off my tank and always stop it after the first click releases. Anyone know why its doing this? Please remove if this is in the wrong section and any help would be appreciated!

The fuel tank is ~12.7 gallons, the fuel light comes on with ~2 gallons left. So if you fill up as soon as the fuel light comes on you'd be putting in ~10.7 gallons. How many gallons do you put in the tank when you fill up? I'm usually tossing in ~9.5-11 gallons each fillup.

Mis-installed fuel pump? The float gauge sender is in the tank.

My guess as well if he's putting in the normal amount for a fillup

Page 11-161 of the Service Manual lists the resistance levels of the fuel gauge sending unit which you can measure with a full tank of fuel and an ohmmeter. You can download the manual and there should be a link on this forum. Manual covers all years up to and including 2008. Note this is the North American version of the manual but I see no reason there'd be any differences elsewhere. (Page 11-120 of the earlier posted manual with the bikini model on the cover).
Position Low Ohm High Ohm
F 11 13
1/2 52 58
Low 114.4 120.4
E 130 132
Not sure how that will format but the resistance with a full tank -- float all the way up -- should be between 11 and 13 Ohms. The LEDs on the panel have been known to die so if the resistance is good maybe you're missing a gauge segment.

some ap1's had a fuel filler pipe defect that caused that issue, mine did, I replaced the fuel filler pipe and all was good. Other issues could be a problem with the vent that runs off the fill pipe if it fills with fuel. Both issues cause typical gas station pumps to shut off early.

I do this with every new vehicle I get, I have a 1/2 gal. gas can that I keep in the car when the gauge starts to read I'm low on gas. I run the car till its out of gas, that way I know how far I can go when the low gas light comes on(or the last bar disappears). Put the 1/2 gal. of gas in the car and go fill it up and see what I get for total gal's. I really don't care if my gauge reads correct when full, but I do want it to read correctly when I'm getting low on fuel. I know its not good to run the pump dry but I've never had a fuel pump go out before 200k miles. So running it dry once is no big deal for me and knowing how far I can go on m/t is well worth knowing(my '06 S can go around 50 miles after the last bar disappears going 50 mph).
