Acutally step one is verify you have the radio code, then disconect the battery

Also you should have to remove the rear tray to get enought clearance to pull the fuel pump assy up and out.

If you are going to keep wrenching on your car, please go buy a OEM shop manual. This was covered in detail. You can get one here http://www.helminc.com

Can anyone tell me why or when we should replace the fuel pump?

If you are installing higher flow injectors. Normally with a S/C or Turbo.

So other than that there is no need to worry about changing it out due to high miles or something else going wrong?

I did, but I am FI. I did forget to check for code on the car radio, but it didn't have one.

i've done a lot of things to a car without pulling the negative terminal out and nothing ever goes wrong. maybe its a myth. who knows

Its just a precaution. Nothing might ever happen, but it only takes one time to completly change your life...

The idea of gasoline and a live electrical system doesn't sound to smart does it?

well if the fuel pump isnt even on and u unplug that eletrical there is no current going through. the key has to be in the on position for it to have a current going through. theres only 2 wires to the fuel pump btw. well anyway hope the OP does it the safer way
