I think the fuel light is triggered separately from the level indicator. I have had the lamp go on already at three bars, then go off again for some time. Also had the lamp not come on until the last bar, so this is not abnormal.

Just drive a couple more miles!

If you have ever seen the back of a cluster you will see that it has bulbs that twist in its a good bet its burned out if it goes to 1 bar and doesnt light.

Here is a pic of the back of the cluster with the fuel light bulb out and layed by the plug.

I have the exact opposite problem. It seems like my damn fuel light is ALWAYS on.

I've found the fuel indicator in my AP1 to be extremely inaccurate.

I usually measure remaining fuel as: You have about 50 miles remaining after the light comes on. Here's why:

I have switched to conservative driving due to my long weekly commute and higher prices (and because I'm interested in the numbers). Don't take any of the following as absolutes, everyone has different conditions. My fuel light comes on when the gauge is between 0 and 2 bars, but usually 2 (80% of the time). I never put more than 12.7 or so gallons in. If you fill up right when the gas light comes on, you'll probably only need 10-11 gallons.

I have ran it out of fuel four times in the last five weeks, (and come close the rest), and from the moment the light goes on, I have about 50 to 70 miles remaining. So that is what I measure remaining fuel by now. I tried to note the incremental changes in the fuel gauge according to the trip, but the gauge is too whack. Get used to your trip odometer.

All estimates done off a running record, total miles traveled by total fuel put in. MY02, no mods.

Estimate for normal driving (VTEC whenever I feel like it, 90-100mph on the 30mile "shortcut" home, fairly aggressive acceleration to move up/through freeway traffic at 75-80mph):
23-24 mpg, light on at 250-260 miles, empty at 300-310 miles. This is what I got for the last couple of years, and I would expect the majority of drivers to expect.

Estimate for fuel sipper/super commuter (no VTEC, cruise 80%, mostly highway 70%, slow acceleration):
28-29 mpg, light on at 290-305 miles, empty at 350-365 miles. (Best tank: 29.8mpg, light on at 309, empty at 380.5, 12.767 gal to fill up). Same route, mostly highway. This is damn near optimum. And boring. I'm sure someone, sometime, somewhere can hit 400 miles on a tank (fuel all the way up the neck, all highway & cruise, etc). So you save about 2 to 3 gallons a tank. At $3.30 per gallon, that is $7 to $10 on a $40 tank. FWIW.

My .02
