Default Fuel injection cleaning at 20K?

Just wondering if its too early to use this high end cleaner . I have an 03 with 20K miles.

I noticed carbon flakes on my bumper. Do you think that carbon is also depositing in the engine?

Anyone used this stuff , and notice improvement.

The car idles and accelerates fine, but I can't get better than 20 mpg local driving. I don't floor it at every light, and I don't light foot it either. Somewhere in between.

I only use a "high end" injector cleaner when the symptoms indicate there may be a clogged injector. So far, with the S2000, this has not been necessary. I use an "ordinary" maintenance dose of injector cleaner that comes in the cheap single application bottles at oil change intervals. I seriously doubt even this is necessary as modern day fuels are quite clean. I just continue to do it because it's an old habit I got into from doing it for over 3 decades. However, if you've been using a "lesser" brand of gas, then injector cleaning may be more important.
I wouldn't worry much about the carbon deposits on your bumper. This is mostly in the exhaust system. Such deposits in the engine get taken up by the oil. That's what it's there for and that's why duty to oil changes is important.

Without removing your injectors from the engine, there are generally 3 types of cleaning available, each one getting more expensive as the more extensive cleaning is required.
1. The lowest cost and easiest to do is the "maintenance" dose. This can cost a couple of bucks a bottle and is added to the gas tank. Usually, 1 bottle will treat up to 75 qts of gasoline. I usually dump one of these in at each oil change interval a little more concentrated than recommended.
2. The next costs maybe 3 to 4 times the cost of #1. This is when you are more certain that the injectors have a noticable degree of clogging. It also comes in a bottle that you dump into the gas tank. This is done whenever you think the injectors are the problem.
3. The last is the most costly and may require a shop to do for you. This is a product that comes in a pressurized can and the kit comes with various fittings so you can attach the can to the fuel rail. You run the engine with this cleaner till the can is empty. This is for a confirmed injector plug up. The cost may be as much as 50 bucks if a shop does it for you. It's not something you want to mess with it you are mechanically inept.

After the above, the injectors need to be taken off the car and cleaned individually and bench tested for adequate spray and pattern. By this time, you should just buy new injectors and slap yourself on the peepee for letting them get so bad.

I use BG products, I think they work well. The local Honda service department offers a BG service. They spray it directly into the intake manifold. They say it works better than putting it in your gas tank. Gives it a full on dose. I have always put it in my tank, I have never had it sprayed. I would say I noticed a difference on my old integra that had 125k mi. Have not used it in the S, have yet to need it at 25k mi.

I've been a bit of a BG fan as well. Then again, until recently, I had given just shy of 6 years of service to Honda and Acura dealers. Their stuff really does make a difference when you do the full job.
