Amsoil is the best, but it lasts so long that I cant stand to leave it in more than 10k miles, and thats the only reason to pay that much for it. Amsoil SSO 0W-30 is there best oil and it's $12.99 a QT. IIRC ATM 10W-30 is a little less.

I noticed a big difference in noise at start-up when I switched from conventional (factory fill) dino oil to Mobil 1 10w-30 EP (i.e. alot less)

I plan to try Amsoil 10w-30 next time and see if I notice any further reduction...

Since I lost my source for wholesale M1 I just buy whatever synthetic that is cheapest. I have never noticed a difference in sound level with an oil change.

My last change used Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic for $19 for five quarts at Wmart.

#2 has got to be the new syntec. kinda unfair test though since any new oil change is gonna be unsheared.

Amsoil 5w-40 AFL Euro is so quiet at idle over Castrol 10w-30 it sounds like a different engine under the bonnet. That's what the extra viscosity will do for you though. I like it. I'd choose Castrol 0w30 GC as my next favourite oil though, a proven performer and many good reports to make it a consistent reliable engine oil.

I just went from mobil 1 to castrol and noticed that my engine didn't sound like it was about to fall apart.

I would hazard a guess that the new Castrol Edge line is based on the same technology used in the GC 0w-30 formula, thus better base oils along the line of group 4/5 PAO/Ester blend. Unfortunately we dont' have the Edge line in my parts right now, but I'm sure we should see it sometime in the near future. Sounds promising for an OTC oil.
