Fixed - metallic ringing sound from right rear of car
Now that I have had the S2000 for about a month, I noticed a very slight metallic ringing noise coming from the right rear of the car when taking off from a stop. I could only hear the noise for a second before the noise of the engine drowned everything else out. At first, I thought one of the exhaust tips on the AP2 was loose. It kind of had that high frequency vibration noise you get from metal on metal. But the exhaust tips were tight.
OK, this needs further investigation. Good old S2KI to the rescue. Did a bunch of searching and reading and I discovered the potential issue/problem with loose axle nuts. I think to myself "no, this can't be the problem". So I remove the left rear center cap, remove the axle nut (it was on pretty tight), dab a little engine oil on the nut mating surface, and torque to 180 lb/ft. My torque wrench is heavy duty and goes to 260 lb/ft. I torqued the axle nut to 240 lb/ft.
Then moved over to the right rear tire. Removed the center cap and as I was loosening the nut, the axle nut on the left hand side was way looser than the right hand side. Son-of-a-. . . . I bet that is the the problem. Removed the nut, oiled the surface and torqued to 180 lb/ft. Made a mark on the nut. Re-torqued to 240 lb/ft. That moved the nut about 45 degrees. Seemed tight enough to me so I stopped there. Buttoned everything up and went for a test drive.
Voila! No more ringing noise. It was that stinking axle nut - on too loose. Thanks S2KI for the advice. Solved my problem.
I celebrated my successful repair by purchasing a new shift knob. Me likey.

great...but, your axle nuts are still not torqued to the s2ki spec. To save those bearings and hubs, you need to go to spec (180-220 lbft) then continue another 45-60 degrees.
good luck!

Hmmm, I hear a slight intermittent ringing when starting from a start. I wonder if this could be it? I need to find a big torque wrench!
