Decided to resurrect this thread since I noticed the same thing; a slight whine in 1st gear, while clutch is to the floor, costing, and shifter in 1st gear. Any experiences or thoughts about this slight whine? Mine is a AP2 with 10,000 miles on it, trans fluid changed at 9,000, just noticed the whine recently.

I also think its cool sounding, from what I heard, the first generation Miata's trans was designed to make a slight gear box whine; sorta to replicate the sound that the old British roadsters made.

Which part of "The OIL Journals" haven't you clicked on yet?

EDIT: As to the whine, I've had it in ALL my Hondas that were manual transmission equipped. My brother has a 5 spd accord that does the same thing. I read unverified rumors that these were the synchros trying to match the speed of the gears.

Here's another test for you. Get the car up to about 25mph, put the clutch in and leave the gear lever in neutral. Then, act like you're going to push the gear selector into 1st gear but DON'T push the gear selector fully into the shift gate. As you begin to select 1st gear you'll hear the whining noise quickly increase in pitch. The same thing can be done with 2nd gear, the noise sounds roughly the same.

I've had this noise in the cold, in the wet, on hot summer days in the middle of august. It's been on my FWD Hondas and my RWD Hondas. The noise is the same regardless of how fresh the transmission fluid is, changing the fluid doesn't seem to affect the noise. Changing brands of transmission fluid also doesn't affect the noise. I've always considered the noise to be normal, if it bothers you turn the radio volume from '0' to '1'. Problem solved.
