Default finding tdc

i am in the process of replacing my factory headgasket and i am having trouble getting the marks to line up. when i have the white mark on the crank pulley lined up with the pointer, the cam chain sprocket marks do not line up with the cylinder head. i have the factory manual and have followed it to a t and it just doesn't seem to be lining up correctly.

if i have the chain sprocket lined up with the cylinder head then the white mark on the crank pulley is about an eighth of an inch to the left of the pointer. i don't know what i am doing wrong, but any help is much appreciated.

and yes i searched, but didn't find quite what i was looking for

Can you post a pic as if you are checking the marks...we may be able to tell you if you're close enough.
