Default Filled gas tank for first time, smoke comes out

So I had about 270miles on the car and I went in for my first fill up (the dealer had started me with a full tank).
Anyway, after I filled up with 93 (I'm sure it was 93) I pulled away and drove 5 minutes to my driveway.
I got out of the car and left it running but when I turned around, the rear of the car was enveloped in a grey cloud.
(this was at night by the way) I got extemely scared and went back to the gas station to check that I had gotten
93 octane. At each red light on the way there, the back of the car would begin to cover in grey smoke. I verified
that it WAS 93 octane and then a few minutes later, the thick smoke stopped coming out of the pipes.
Everything seems fine but this scared the shit out of me. I can't figure out what it could have been. I would appreciate
any insight.

Thanks.

How cool was it outside? Sure it wasn't just condensation? The car will emit a cloud of condensation when warming up (with any gas) when outside temps are below maybe 75 (I'm sure humidity plays a role, too).

No ideas on your situation , but "270 miles on a tank" wow !
My car is 4 months old with 3100 miles and I have never seen more than 165 miles per tank with a gallon in reserve.

Was it one of those gas pumps with 1 nozzle for all types of gas? Maybe the last fill up was with a different grade and that grade had water in the fuel. When you gassed up, you got the watered down fuel that was left in the pipe before your grade filled the pipe. Since water sinks to the bottom of the tank, it took a bit of time before you managed to "burn" it off. (I'm guessing here.)

The F20C will run fine on regular (87 octane), but will not produce the same power once it warms up. This is because the ECU will retard timing sooner to avoid engine knock. IMO, there is no way that octane has anything to do with the smoke.

Like others have mentioned I think it's more likely to be condensate vapors or some other contamination (like water) that was in the gas you pumped.

If the problem is repeatable, take it to your dealer. Let us know if you figure this one out or if the problem goes away.

Thanks for the helpful info guys. The problem has not occured since then and I now have 670 miles on the car.
I'm gonna be extra cautious and wait until 900 miles to VTEC.
Thanks again.
