Default Failed Transponder

A friend of mine with a MY 2000 S2000 just had the transponder fail in her car with around 60k miles on it. The symptom was that the car would crank but not start and the problem was diagnosed at a local Honda dealer. Just want to know if anyone else had this issue.

The transponders are in the keys, which are powered via the Immobilizer reciever. Most likely he had a failed immobilizer reciever, which I have seen fail before on other models.

Just a terminology correction -- the immobilizer is a transceiver, not just a receiver. RFID chips work by having the reader send out a radio wave. The chip draws its power from the wave, which allows it to send out a wave of its own, with a code. The reader then reads that return code.

True, But Honda calls it a reciever only, in the service manual.

No biggie. I just think the whole idea of a radio signal powering the chip is a cool hack.

Thanks, I have wanted that simple explanation.

We have had several posts reporting the immobilizer failing over the years.

One of my 4 keys stopped working. If I try to start the car with that key, it just cranks and cranks but won't start. Honda told me the key just lost its programming. to fix, I would need to bring in all 4 keys and have them reprogrammed. Dunno how much weight this bears, and I don't plan to ever fix it since I have 3 working keys still.

and when I say key i mean transponder
