whatever you do..don't be like the people who pay close to 2 grand for gears...lol 440$ for 4.57's installed with a yellow jacket...no need for the rip offs....just watch yourselves and look around for respectable local driveline shops...you'll be golden.

also on the le607...basically 7 or 8 s2ki del val members have gotten their gears done at the place i got mine done. the guy that does them is highly respected...he's never been happy with any of the diff fluid that has been brought to him...this includes...mobil 1, oem, le607(i think 2 people), other off name stuff...the only thing that he liked was the redline in jfo's racing diff...but that was only used for like 2-3 weekends hahaha so yea..fyi...

Do you think that a stronger differential would just result in the breaking the next weak link in the drivetrain?

What makes you think the Giken is better then a Torsen?
Its a different system, clutch disks instead of gears.
In the Giken you probably need to run a "special" friction modified (non LE-607) oil and change it frequently for the clutch pack to work properly.
There is no mention of oil type required at their website though.
Worth asking.
Tell us if you allready know

25k miles, the way you drove (and drive ) the car, may be too much, even for LE-607.

Are you going to change the final drive ratio too?
4.56's?

Im not saying its "better" per say, but better for MY application.
I drag race the S as much as possible, and here is some info for you that may help.

#1 what old cars have, "no LSD"

"Open" Standard Differential Technology

Pros:
Powers the slipperiest wheel at all times
Powers one wheel at a time in corners
Powers one wheel at a time in the slick stuff
Lowers the cornering ability limit
Cons:
Cheap to build
Lasts nearly forever
Powers the outside wheel in a corner
Cheap to repair/replace

#2 what i will be soon running.

Positraction (Clutch/Cone-Type) Differential Technology

Pros:
Powers the outside wheel
+20% torque transfer to the wheel with traction
Old and Proven technology that works
Can handle more torque than any other differential
Internal discs are cheaply and easily replaced
Will not "break" or "shatter" on launch
Cons:
Lasts 40,000 miles, then needs servicing
Requires a friction modifier to work properly
Still allows a slipping wheel to "spin-up"
Grip is not instantaneous, requires wheel spin
Internal Discs/Cones must be replaced

#3 what the S2k comes with stock.

Zexel Torsen (Worm Gear Driven) Differential Technology

Pros:
Never needs replacing once installed
No need for a limited-slip additive
Instantly transfers torque, no wheel spin
Is the latest technology in differentials
Cons:
Can be fragile; 500ft/lb torque limit on OEM units
Generally more expensive than other differentials
Expensive Upfront cost
Not available for all applications as of 2002

You see some of the attributes of the clutch type, that make me smile? and would benefit me... #1 "Can handle more torque than any other differential ".....#2 "Internal discs are cheaply and easily replaced"...
#3 "Will not "break" or "shatter" on launch"
this stuff is what makes me want to go to a clutch type. the torsen is a solid unit, but for what im doing, it has proven not to hold up.

as for
Talking about diffs, what do you think about Spoon's racing diff? Any better or just more expensive ($1,200)?
the spoon is a clutch type also, so is the ATS carbon, and the OS giken. with the ATS and the OS giken being the highest quality of the bunch.

and this...
Great post! Sounds like you're the self appointed equipment tester for all of us. I haven't figured out why yet, though. If you could, please add this thread link to the one below from "Oil Journals". It looks like we have 2 failures now with LE 607. I don't know how much can be attributed to the fluid after 61K miles of unprecedented abuse though.
Ive kinda been the equipment tester. only because i have the tools/knowledge/skill to do any repair on the car myself. so its cost effective. and i didnt run the LE607 61k, i changed it at 25k, and it looked like new, so i was gonna go 40k on it this time and see. but with the shock loads over and over , the parts just couldnt hang. the fluid rocks, it cant save the world though.

last but not least...
Do you think that a stronger differential would just result in the breaking the next weak link in the drivetrain?
At this point, im confident, that the parts on the car can gang, as long as you dont unload, then reload (shock) a part, it isnt likely to fail if its made from quality materials. the mounts look good, axles look good, driveline looks good, and wheel bearings seem OK. i honestly want to see if i can lift the front wheels up, or if the diff case will spread first. imagine an s2k doing a wheely... thats what im talking about. we shall see. as of now, i just want to drive my baby again..
i miss her bad. anyways. later gang.

Man, your post was so interesting to read, it is intertwined with interesting words and analogies. Do you write books?

(Partly sarcasm and partly a compliment.)

IMO the LE-607 made it possible to abuse this diff for so long.
Final drive gears look
Bearing caps did not break
If S2oooNvegas would have serviced it a little more frequently and/or used a xxW-140 or better, a straight 140 weight oil (think LE-608 ) I think this diff would still be alive.

No offence: S2oooNvegas also "needs" to edit his pro's & con's, especially the open diff ones

A huge disadvantage for the clutch type diffs is, IMO!, that you can't use LE oils, certainly not without the limited slip additive, if that's seperatly available.
I see a final drive failure on the horizon, maybe started by bearing cap failure due to exces forces created by the pinion on the ring gear.
IOW a huge BOOOM at the drag strip.
Not just a ticking sound, that will let you limb home.

How much power are you making? Still stock? FI?

almost 230 wheel, and 160 wheel torque. i want to post a vid and sheet, but i promised before that i would not, till i cleared 230 wheel, untuned. on stock ecu, with no VAFC at all. im almost there.
