Default Factory coil pack differences

Anyone have any insight as to why the 3 generations of s2ks have different coil pack part numbers

Ap1 ~ $105
Ap2 ~ $52
Ap2 dbw ~ $78

Honda generally tries to reuse as many parts as possible, so why did they choose to use 3 different parts?

Does it have anything to do with the valve cover since ap1, ap2 and ap2 dbw are all different valve covers? Or is it purely the electrical requirements?

I'm aware of this thread

I was more curious if someone had done an extensive profiling of the different coil packs as to their electrical performance

Honda has a tendency to supersede antiquated part numbers so that if they could stock just 1 part that is backwards compatible with earlier parts they would.

As noted by billman, the service manual specifically says do not interchange AP2 DBW coil packs for AP1/Ap2-non DBW

I used the $52 ones on my 02 AP1, no issues. I can feel they're better than the old AP1 coils

Ive ran both AP1 and pre 06 coils in my F22c motor...The other thread I posted did show that the RSX packs are "better" in performance
