Ok, so my engine has a spun rod bearing, and I need to replace it, so I've decided to go with the f22c.

That, I'm sure of. What I'm not sure of is should I keep my AP1 tranny or get the AP2 tranny and swap that in too?

My car has <50k miles on it, and there is nothing wrong with the current (AP1) transmission (as far as I can tell). It does feel kind of "notchy" but thats not really that big of a deal and doesn't affect performance AFAIK.

I've read that the AP2 has carbon synchros, which is desirable to me, but it seems like a lot of money to swap just for that. I also saw in the best motoring vid where they were saying the AP1 tranny paired with the f22 was the best combo, and I've also seen people here on the forums talk about it. Main things keeping me away from staying with the AP1 I guess is firstly the high highway RPMs. It was already pretty high with the f20c, I'm guessing it will be higher, right? Anyone give me a more specific number? The car is my DD, and its only the highway A LOT, so thats the biggest issue. It also doesn't make sense to me that the AP1 tranny is better since it seems like acceleration would be better with the AP2 tranny.

I guess I'm just kind of on the fence here, and not so keen to throw down the extra cash if I don't need to.

Anyways, let me know what you guys think, I'm sure most of you are immensely more knowledgeable than myself.

If the trans you have is good, why spend the money? I'd wait until it wears out to make the decision.

If the AP1 transmission was so great with the F22, why would Honda waste their time and money making a new AP2 tranny?

If you've never noticed, they kept the tranny the same (as the AP1), except with carbon synchros, in Japan.

Most drivers on the street will prefer the 4% lower 1-4 gears and 2% taller 6th of the AP2 trans.

It has been noted that the AP1 transmission might be better suited for the 2.2, and the AP2 transmission better for the 2.0. That would make the two perform more similarly in terms of acceleration and speeds in gears, at least in gears 1-4.

Personally, I would prefer to have the closer 4-6 ratios of the AP1 trans for either the 2.0 or 2.2, and don't mind the lower gears being taller and 6th being shorter relative to AP2 ratios.

I actually think the taller geared AP1 trans is better suited to the 2.2L, because of the short engine power band.

Everyone I know who has the AP2 tranny is always complaining about the lower gearing because they run out of revs too quickly. The AP1 tranny on the AP2 motor solves that problem - and vice versa.

the actual ratios for 1-4 are exactly the same, 5th and 6th are longer and the secondary gear is shorter in the ap2 tranny. Because of the different secondary reduction gear, the actual ratios of 5th and 6th are very similar to the ap1 tranny.

Going to an ap2 tranny would be like having a 4.3 final drive, but only in gears 1-4.

that being said, the ap2 tranny is "better" but imho, not worth the $1000 plus that people want for them. Spend $200 and put the ap2 secondary gear in your ap1 tranny if you want the gearing advantage.
